Missing from my book is the story of "Slumach's Map." Today I would add the following to the text on page 37
According to Aunt Mandy, Slumach “sitting on the cell bench“ had drawn a map for her father of the location where he found the nuggets. Pierre destroyed Slumach’s drawing but years later he redrew the map from memory, and one of his daughters made copies. Aunt Mandy also told Donald Waite that Pierre’s drawing and those copies were lost in housefire in the 1930s.
The only plausible reason why Pierre would have drawn this map and had copies made was they were intended for sale or to impress gullible prospectors. Seen in that light it seems unlikely that the map drawn by Slumach ever existed. For Pierre, with his intimate knowledge of the lay of the land a few pointers would have been enough – he did not need a map.
